Vermont Wedding :: Katie & Eric :: Sugarbush Resort

Katie and Eric were married on May 5th, 2012 at the Sugarbush Resort in Warren, Vermont. It was a beautiful spring day, and that evening there was a spectacular “super moon”. Both the Bride and Groom prepared themselves inside Clay Brook, and it was very fun to look out the balcony, watching how the day was progressing. I was excited to see the Grift moving their gear into Timbers for the reception, as always they put on amazing performance. Katie wore a dress by Ramona Kavesa, with shoes by Vera Wang. Her Bridesmaids wore dress’ by L’Elite. The floral design was done by Silver Toad. The cupcakes were done by the Vermont Cake Studio. The timing could not have worked out better, as soon as the cocktails were done the sun dipped behind the mountain. After the toasts the Grift started playing and it was time to dance. Fuji X100 on assignment: Vergennes Laundry revisited

I had been waiting for Leica’s big announcement on the 10th for a while… secretly hoping they would release a M10 with a competitive sensor. It didn’t happen; what they brought to market was essentially an improved M9- that only shoots black and white. That’s great, but not something I can justify. To make a long story short, that event combined with the now legendary Zack Arias blog posting lead me to the X100. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Canon gear… but it is heavy and more than I want to deal with when I am just out and about. The X100 sounded quirky, but also somehow perfect (i.e. small, discreet, high quality photos). None of this is news, and this blog posting might sound about a year old to some of you… but I just got off of the fence and wanted to share my thoughts. I love the X100. Last year I photographed the Vergennes Laundry (and was so excited when the photos made it into Food & Wine). I do not often get the chance to revisit editorial work, but this was a perfect opportunity… I knew there was going to be great light, plenty of action, and delicious food. Not to bog things down with shop talk, but I also knew the ISO on this camera was incredible and so I primarily shot with Aperture Priority. Just a few more quick notes before the photos (which always speak more to me in gear reviews). The shutter is near silent, which I love. The viewfinder is fantastic (I did forget to switch to EVF for a few of the close ups, and I think that would have helped with parallax framing issues). Auto white balance works- it works amazingly well. The AF is certainly workable (read: focus, frame, wait, click). One thing that I was only slightly disappointed about… raw files processed through LR are still better looking. The straight-out-of-camera JPG’s are definitely usable, but I will continue to shoot raws. However, I will also continue to tinker with the contrast and sharpness settings, fingers crossed because it would be *heavenly* (or ironically like the “film” days) to not have to run everything through LR processing. Bottom line and more than anything else… the X100 is fun to use! Please feel free to email me if you have any specific technical questions… Thanks again Julianne and Didier!

Spring Vermont Wedding: Gina & Patrick

I am very excited to share Gina and Patrick’s Vermont wedding with you. They were married on April 28th 2012 at the West Mountain Inn in Arlington, Vermont. Gina and Patrick are both self employed creatives at Ginabeanology and Loop Seven, respectively. Gina’s work as a stylist certainly showed, every detail had been given the right amount of attention. The two of them organized this amazing event in just seven months. In Gina’s words, “Putting a wedding together is like putting a photo shoot together, and luckily it’s what I do for a living… so everything was pretty much under control” Besides all of the design work, many of the details were the result of DIY projects; ” My Mom and I made the runners for the tables, my Dad and I cut the wood chips for the escort cards, my nieces and nephews tied keys onto each chip, put stickers on candy bags and my sister baked dozens and dozens of cookies for welcome bags, Patrick and I designed and put together the website, as well as the Save-the-Date and invitation.” April Barton from Suite 303 came up from NYC for the hair and make up. Nancy Bishop Floral Designers did a beautiful job with the bouquets and boutonnieres. Nick Styker from Top Hat handled the music and kept everyone dancing in the barn. Lastly, the cake was done by Cuisine Lucette. Oh and if you are wondering who made the ring pillow, welcome bag tags, water bottle labels, stickers for cookies, menu cards, candy jar labels, treasure chest, escort cards, chalkboard, wedding cake toppers, paper banners, ceremony arch, thank you tags on the blankets, and the initial wreaths… that was Gina. A few images from my iPhone this winter… I must admit I had some reservations about entering into the questionable world of iPhonography and Instagram. Truth be told now is that I love it! It obviously does not replace any of my “real” camera equipment. The quality is impressive, but it is more the fact that I can (and do) bring the camera anywhere. This blog post by Chip Litherland captures my sentiment quite well. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on how the iPhone has impacted photography? Do you think it has cheapened the medium through quick effects or has it leveled the playing field?

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Walking around on the Salar de Uyuni felt like another world, and my mind kept telling me it was ice. It was salt of course, but a giant snowfield was my only frame of reference. I even found myself phantom braking our 4×4, my mind fearful that we were about to slide out of control on the slippery surface. The texture was just the opposite, crystalline and coarse. Adding to the surreal experience was the optical illusion of floating islands, a mirage resulting from heat waves playing games with my vision. Despite feeling isolated, we arrived to a full parking lot at Incahuasi. An island within the salt flats, covered with cactus – which happened to be flowering during our visit. It was an experience beyond words for me. The salt is mined and also used for construction. We stayed at Hotel Takya de Sal, and everything from the walls to the chairs were made of salt. It was a bit chilly when I went out to photograph the hotel at night, but I had never seen so many stars. Again I filled my journal with adjectives, but nothing came close. I hope to make it back to the salt flats during the wet season, although it is hard to imagine making this landscape any more dramatic.

Chalalan Ecolodge, Bolivia

It was a short flight over the Andes in an old airplane. I tried not to dwell on it, but the chipped and scratched prop sat right outside my window. Fortunately the air was very calm and the flight was smooth. As we dropped through the clouds I caught my first glimpse of the Amazon. The rivers were muddy brown and the vegetation was lush. After bouncing across the grass the plane pulled up next to the main terminal at the Rurrenabaque airport. As soon as the door opened I could feel the thick jungle air; it was early in the day but already hot. Downtown was a short bus ride away on the cobblestone main road. Tourism has taken over Rurrenabaque, and it seemed that every corner had an office advertising different jungle adventures. I made a quick errand at the nearby market, picked up some sunscreen and then we were off to the river. The ride up the Beni and Tuichi Rivers was slow against the current, further compounded by frequent gravel bars. Eventually (6 hours) we pulled up next to the bank and were greeted by a few of the folks from the lodge. It felt great to stretch my legs and the hike into the lodge was exciting. My senses were overwhelmed with birdcalls and smells (wild pigs abound here and have a powerful scent gland). The next few days were the perfect mix of hiking, reading, napping and swimming in the lagoon. The food was also excellent, and the wood fired oven reminded me a bit of home. Prior to arriving I had been informed that the lagoon housed Cayman as well as Piranhas’…I felt sure I would not be swimming. However, the heat won and it felt amazing to dive in and reach the cool water below the surface. It was my first time in the jungle and waking up to howler monkeys is something I will not forget, a sound both eerie and humbling. I could write much more about the Chalalan Ecolodge, but I am eager to share the photos! I hope you enjoy them.

Hotel Museo Cayara, Bolivia

After downloading and archiving nearly 5,000 images, I thought it would have been difficult to pick a starting point for sharing my travel experience in Bolivia. I decided to begin with the end. Hotel Museo Cayara was the last place that I stayed outside of La Paz. It is situated about 30 minutes Northwest of Potosi, however upon arriving I felt transported to a different century. It dates back to 1557. Hotel Museo Cayara is a Spanish hacienda, with beautiful courtyards, dining halls, libraries and a chapel. The property sits at the head of a well irrigated agricultural valley; picture Oxen instead of John Deere. I showed up road weary, but felt compelled to wander the grounds and village. The area is criss-crossed with stonewalls and cobblestone roads. My limited Spanish did not get me very far with Quechua speaking locals, however I managed to converse with local kids through football. The altitude was lower than neighboring Potosi, but still high enough to be noticed with any moderate exertion. It was springtime and as I walked home the light hitting new growth (fava beans) in the fields was spectacular. Later that evening the owner gave a very interesting tour of the Museo, which included too many beautiful artefacts to recount. It truly felt like stepping back in time. One of my favorite things was the fountain in the back courtyard, it has been flowing for hundreds of years. My only advice is to give yourself at least three or four days here, you will want time to sit and watch the light moving across the walls. The last photo here is different, an accident taken while leaving the valley… but I included it because for me it represents the dream like sensation of moving through time.
